Winter Newsletter 2010

Proportion is very important to us, both in our minds and lives and as objectified visually, since it is thought, and feeling undivided, since it is unity and harmony, easy or difficult, and often peace and quiet.

Donald Judd, Art and Architecture, 1983

101 Spring Street, New York

This past November, Judd Foundation’s project team removed the first pieces of cast iron from the 1870 façade of 101 Spring Street. More than 1,300 individual pieces of cast iron along the west and south facades, which run along Spring and Mercer Streets in SoHo, New York, will be numbered, tagged, and shipped to a foundry for cleaning, repair or recasting using original sand mold techniques. This work is part of a comprehensive restoration, which will allow the building to open to the public for tours and programs.

Gatherings
During the two-year restoration of 101 Spring Street, Judd Foundation will continue to host its programs and lectures off-site in New York.

The first off-site program was a “gathering”, held last November at the home of academic, curator and collector Saul Ostrow.  Over light fare provided by Savoy in SoHo, artists, writers and Judd fans avidly debated Judd’s theories on color and space as delineated in his 1993 essay, Some Aspects of Color and Red and Black in Particular--an essay written on the occasion of Judd's winning the Sikkens Award.  Despite what the title suggests, it was generally agreed that Judd seemed to have taken the opportunity to deal with space rather than color.

Events

Egg Nog Affair

Judd Foundation's annual Egg Nog Affair was held last month at Phaidon's new SoHo store in New York, located just around the corner from 101 Spring Street.  Books, beverages, family, friends and colleagues were in abundance despite the bitter cold winter night.  Philanthropy was there too, as a portion of each book sale was donated directly to Judd Foundation.

Marfa, Texas

Marfa, like so many parts of the country, is experiencing extreme weather.  A violent rainstorm last summer brought several days of heavy rain causing temporary flooding and damage to several Judd Foundation buildings.   La Mansana de Chinati/The Block, Donald Judd's home and studio, suffered flooding inside the courtyard, severely damaging the exterior adobe walls.  This was followed later in the year by unseasonably cold temperatures, which blanketed the state for ten days, causing pipes to freeze over in the two-story home at The Block.   In both cases, foundation staff responded quickly, ensuring that there was no damage to art work and that all urgent repairs were made.

In addition, extensive repair work was required to address water damage to the sagging awning of Donald Judd's Art Studio building.  The staff in Marfa removed ten layers of accumulated roofing material, weighing nearly 2 tons, from the awning, before fabricating a new tin soffit to match the original in material and pattern.

Marfa, Texas

In November 2010, UV film was applied to clerestory windows at the East Building of La Mansana de Chinati/The Block, and the storefront windows of Judd's Ranch Office on South HIghland Avenue.  This work continues a property-wide effort to apply UV film to properties at the Block and replace old UV film where necessary.  Protection of windows at the West Building was completed in February 2010.

However, much essential restoration remains, including major repairs to Judd's Architecture Building and restoration of the deteriorated adobe throughout the properties.  In order to support the ongoing, necessary preservation of Donald Judd's spaces in Marfa, Judd Foundation has set up a fund for Historic Preservation and Programs as part of its Capital Campaign.

To help Judd Foundation continue its mission to preserve and maintain the legacy of Donald Judd, please consider a tax deductible contribution to this fund:

A Good Chair Is a Good Chair

A survey of Donald Judd's furniture, organized by Ikon Gallery (Birmingham, UK), in conjunction with Judd Foundation, was viewed by over 16,000 visitors from September to November 2010.  Charting the refinement of Judd’s design and production process from the first prototypes in the 1970s to the metal pieces of the 1980s, the exhibition will tour to the Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich, Germany) in July 2011.

A catalogue of the exhibition in English and German will be available in February 2011.  This will be the first new catalogue on Donald Judd's furniture, since the one published on the occasion of his 1993 furniture retrospective at the Museum Boymans-van Beuningan in Rotterdam.

Judd Furniture in Miami
Judd Furniture was represented for the first time last month at Design Miami, December 1-5, by Sebastian+Barquet, New York. Three vibrantly painted metal pieces from 1989 were showcased in the booth, and were well received at the fair for their contribution to the canon of design.
