Featured Event: Brooklyn Museum
January’s Free Target First Saturday: Out and Proud

Saturday, January 7, 5–11pm

This Saturday, come celebrate the diverse achievements of the LGBTQ community and the exhibition HIDE/SEEK: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture. HIDE/SEEK is the first major museum exhibition to focus on themes of gender and sexuality in modern American portraiture. Highlights include a pop-rock performance by Brooklyn-based Ariel Aparicio, a film screening of Rent where participants can sing-a-long, an art-making class that highlights portraiture, and a hip hop dance party by DJ Tikka Masala. Also, make sure to see Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties. This dramatic exhibition explores American art in the riotous decade of the 1920s and includes more than 138 paintings, sculptures, and photographs by 67 artists.

Made in NY Industry Series Explores How to Break into the Film and Television Industry

Wednesday, January 18 | 7pm

 

Central Library, Dweck Center — As part of the “Made in NY” Industry Series, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment presents an in-depth discussion about breaking into the film and television production business. With nearly two dozen primetime TV series based in New York City as well as hundreds of films shot on location here each year, it’s an exciting time for people interested in starting a career in production.

 

This “Made in NY” Industry Series conversation will feature industry professionals who will discuss the ins and outs of what it takes to make that first step in film and TV. The event begins at 7pm. The panel is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. RSVP by emailing programs@brooklynpubliclibrary.org or by calling (718) 230-2200 by Tuesday, January 17.

Bring your holiday tree to Prospect Park, where we’ll turn it into healthy ground cover. Watch your tree go into the chipper and become environment-friendly mulch. Plus, you can take some home for your own yard or garden! Please remove all decorations from the trees. Two convenient drop-off locations: Third Street & Prospect Park West OR Park Circle. Co-sponsored by the Park Slope Civic Council. Free.
